Black dots in carpet are a symptom, not a diagnosis. Color alone cannot tell you whether the marks are loose debris, insects, pest evidence, sticky residue, oil, wicking, filtration soiling, moisture-related discoloration, or contamination associated with newly installed carpet.

Treat any match as a working hypothesis. Mechanisms can coexist. A detergent-treated area, for example, can collect new surface soil while excessive wetting also allows deeper contamination to move upward.
