The sensible conclusion is neither “stripping always works” nor “stripping is a hoax.” It is an aggressive troubleshooting method with narrow potential uses. Murky soak water is not proof that hidden grime was removed, and the process is unnecessary for normally washed laundry.

Before filling a bathtub, diagnose the problem. Correct detergent dosing, eliminate excess fabric softener, reduce the load size, rewash, and add a rinse when appropriate. For a polyester garment with a localized mark, use a stain-by-stain polyester approach rather than treating the whole item for generalized buildup.

Workout clothing illustrates the tradeoff. A method used on white cotton towels cannot automatically be transferred to leggings, compression garments, elastic waistbands, or stretch denim.
